Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year!  There is no better time to worship and sing praises to our Savior, Jesus Christ.  With all there is to be heartbroken about across the globe, we can take comfort in the peace and the love of Christ in our hearts.

What a blessing that Jesus’ earthly mother, Mary, understood the importance of the angel Gabriel’s visitation and that she believed his words – this despite the resulting cultural and religious turmoil.  You see, she was a virgin betrothed to Joseph, but not yet married.  Jesus arrived upon this earth as a little baby, spending His first days in the lowly state of a manger – for there was no room at the inn.

What Child is this, born to the virgin Mary – fully man, yet fully God?  He is the Son of God, the Prince of Peace, and the Savior of the World!  Scripture tells us that if we put our trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior, we become children of God, our sin is forgiven (washed away), and we have the promise of eternal life in the very presence of Almighty God!  Praise Jesus forevermore!

Luke 1:26-38 (NKJV)
Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary
“Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.  The virgin’s name was Mary.  And having come in, the angel said to her, ‘[r]ejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!’  But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.  Then the angel said to her, ‘[d]o not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.  He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.  And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.’  Then Mary said to the angel, ‘[h]ow can this be, since I do not know a man?’  And the angel answered and said to her, ‘[t]he Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.  Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.  For with God nothing will be impossible.’  Then Mary said, ‘[b]ehold the maidservant of the Lord!  Let it be to me according to your word.’  And the angel departed from her.”

Luke 2:4-7 (NKJV)
“Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.  So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.  And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
“For unto us a Child is born, [u]nto us a Son is given; [a]nd the government will be upon His shoulder.  And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

John 1:12 (NKJV)
“But as many as received Him [Jesus], to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name…”.

John 3:16-17 (NKJV)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

FGGAM started this daily series of Christmas songs on December 14, 2023.  I’ll update this article with a new Christmas music videos each day until Christmas!

The feature for today (Day 8) is a favorite Christmas song of many, What Child Is This.  It was written by William Chatterton Dix, set to the music of Greensleeves, and is performed here by a superior vocal group called Eclipse 6!  The music is a cappella (meaning without accompaniment or voices only), but you won’t miss the instruments!  If you would like to learn a bit more about Eclipse 6, the group’s website can be viewed HERE.

I hope you enjoy and maybe even sing along with What Child Is This:

Here are the lyrics:

VERSE 1
What Child is this, who laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

CHORUS
This, this is Christ, the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary

VERSE 2
Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding
Good Christian, fear for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading

VERSE 3
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him

May God richly bless you!  Please come back to FGGAM’s website every day until Christmas for The 12 Days Of Christmas Songs (2023).
