Israeli Government Gives Itself One More Chance to Avoid Elections

Netanyahu (Israel GPO photograph)The ongoing crisis in Israel’s governing coalition reached another threshold on Monday when it was announced that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would meet with finance minister and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid. The meeting is meant to come to an agreement and avoid early elections, which nearly everyone agrees would be bad for the country. However, both men have been bitterly criticizing each other’s plans in recent weeks, mostly indirectly through the media. “The prime minister will tell Lapid that he will not accept the way he and his party have been behaving,” a Netanyahu associate said. “A country cannot be run this way.” Netanyahu plans also to meet Monday with Bayit Yehudi leader Naftali Bennett and Hatnua head Tzipi Livni.
