Redemptions Drink

‭Luke 22:19-22 NKJV‬

[19] And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” [20] Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. [21] But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. [22] And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

Thursday of Holy Week.

Jesus brings His Disciples together to celebrate. One last and final meal before the work on the Cross Jesus was about to endure.

Even Judas is there.

The meal is prepared. The table is waiting just like the Cross.

But there are some last things Jesus must do before He takes His last breath.

He must first have His Last Supper!

How does the Blood of Jesus bring us Redemption?

What is the action of being saved from sin, our error, or evil. How? Why?

It’s all in the cup.

The New Covenant is in His precious blood!

This Passover meal that Jesus and His disciples were eating is also called the Passover Seder.

During this meal there are always four different cups that are set on the table.

These four cups are drunk throughout the dinner. Each has a symbolic significance.

Now these cups have names.

The Cup of Sanctification.

The Cup of Thanks.

The Cup of Redemption

The Cup of Acceptance.

Each cup would be drunk at a certain time if the meal.

Can you guess which of the cups, traditionally, is drunk after supper?

“Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”

The Cup of Redemption!

This was the Cup that they drank right after Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and broke it. You see this cup filled with wine would represent His Precious Blood, His covering, His Redemption, saving us from our sin and evil!

The Cup of Redemption signifies the slaying of the Passover lamb.

The Blameless Lamb that would atone for the sins of the crookedness of man’s hearts.

The Blood of the Lamb that spared the Israelites in Egypt from the 10th plague of the slaying of the first born.

As they drank this cup it was in remembrance of how the Lord redeems and frees His people Israel from the bondage of Egypt!

Jesus tells His disciples that the wine in this cup is “My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.” As the blood of the Passover Lamb covered the believing Hebrews in Egypt, now it would cover all who would believe.

The time had come.

‭Luke 22:41-44 NKJV‬

[41] And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, [42] saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” [43] Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. [44] And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Redemption comes with a price.

There was only One that could take this cup of wrath, this cup of fury and drink every last drop! Only One perfect and Holy Son of God!

Jesus already knew what was brewing in that cup. Jesus begged the Father.

“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. ”

And Jesus didn’t ask just once but twice! You can hear the hesitation, you feel the agony in His voice! God had such compassion for His Son that He sent an angel to strengthen Jesus. The Father knew what that cup was full of!

He knew what He was asking His Blameless Son to do!

I can imagine Jesus staring down the cup and seeing it full to the top, pondering.

This is so important to understand.

This was the beginning of the end of Jesus’ ministry in human flesh. This had to be done. Jesus willfully took every single one of our sins.

Why?

Why would anyone do such a thing?

Jesus drank of this cup so we, those that are willing to believe, can partake in fellowship with the Father.

Jesus drank so we can come into a relationship with God the Father!

To be shown blameless to the Holy, Righteous, Just Father! This is how much the Creator of the universe, the One whose image we are made in, our Father in Heaven this is what He did for us to be able to have an everlasting relationship with Him! How awesome and amazing is that! He did it for us. Just as He hung on the Cross, He did it all for us! What selfless love. There was only one that could drink it, and it was Jesus Christ the Messiah!

Think about this today.

Really meditate on this. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you today the importance of the Last Supper. The importance of the Cup of Redemption!

‭Isaiah 51:17 NKJV‬

Awake, awake! Stand up, O Jerusalem, You who have drunk at the hand of the Lord The cup of His fury; You have drunk the dregs of the cup of trembling, And drained it out.

God is Holy! He is righteous. He must completely distance Himself from all sin, any evil ,corruption, filth, guilt, shame. God will always defend His Righteousness, His Goodness and His Justice.

There was only One that could take this cup of wrath, this cup of fury and drink every last drop!

Jesus drank the cup.

Jesus was arrested.

He was beaten and wounded for our transgressions.

On Friday He was nailed to the Cross.

As He hung there the whole earth went dark.

‭Matthew 27:45-46 NKJV‬

[45] Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. [46] And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

The Father had to turn His face from the Son. The sin of the past, present and future the Son consumed it from that Cup.

Jesus took the wrath of the Father for the sins of the world! The Father had no choice but to turn His face from the evil, wickedness His Holy Son consumed from that Cup!

Jesus takes His last breath.

The earth quaked. The veil of the Temple is torn from the top to the bottom.

Rocks were split.

‭Matthew 27:52-53

and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; [53] and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

Stand amazed today at the actual sacrifice the Sacrificial Lamb delivered you from.

Taking the wrath of God on your behalf.

Jesus the Perfect Unblemished Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the World!

That’s how the cup of Redemption works!

‭Matthew 27:54 NKJV‬

[54] So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
