REUTERS reports that Bethlehem is normally at its busiest during Christmas, but this year the war between Hamas and Israel has scared away tourists and pilgrims from the West Bank of Israel, leaving hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops deserted.

The owner of Bethlehem’s Alexander Hotel, Joey Canavati, said the hotel had no guests and that “[t]his is the worst Christmas ever.  Bethlehem is shut down for Christmas.  No Christmas tree, no joy, [and] no Christmas spirit.”

Bethlehem is heavily reliant on tourism, but following the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, all reservations, including those for 2024, have been cancelled.

Restaurant owner Ala’a Salameh:

“We are praying for peace.  For peace.  You know, Bethlehem is the city where peace was born, so it should be the messenger for peace to be spread all over the world.”

My brothers and sisters, this writer agrees with Ala’ Salameh.  It’s clear that the answer is that we should seek peace, which is what our Lord and Savior, Jesus, brought and brings to this day, to the world.

Psalm 122:6-7 (Amplified Bible)
“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:  ‘May they prosper who love you [holy city].  May peace be within your walls [a]nd prosperity within your palaces.’”

Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
“For unto us a Child is born, [u]nto us a Son is given; [a]nd the government will be upon His shoulder.  And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace [emphasis mine].”

John 16:33 (NKJV)
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Praise Jesus forevermore!
