As Revival Heats Up, Faith Leaders Urge Christians to ‘Take Personal Responsibility’ for Christian Witness

Thousands in ‘The Return’ Movement Prepare to Gather in Washington for Repentance of America’s National Sins and Their Consequences

NEW YORK — With America mired in crisis and division, evangelical leaders are calling on Christians to cry out in personal and national repentance for a country experiencing the consequences of moral, financial and personal compromises mounting for decades.

Long before COVID-19, stay-at-home orders and government-imposed restrictions, America was marching headlong into decline, according to Pastor Kevin Jessip and New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Cahn, co-chairs of a grassroots church movement known as “The Return: National and Global Day of Prayer and Repentance.”

Jessip is urging Christians to personally consecrate themselves leading up to a landmark gathering of “The Return,” in which thousands of Christians and churches will convene at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on September 26. Jessip says believers must embrace their responsibilities as Christ’s witnesses and followers if they expect God to send revival.

“All over this nation, Christians are praying for revival,” Jessip said. “Many expect the Holy Spirit to fall upon their community and convert multitudes as God sweeps sinners into their churches. They feel that because they have fasted and prayed, God will automatically send revival. But God responds, ‘No, I won’t play that game. You must take personal responsibility for your witness of me. You must be a shining manifestation of my Son and make me known to your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers.’

“Simply put, revival begins when those around you see Jesus in you,” Jessip continued.

Jessip and Cahn point to America’s decline in the economy with $25 trillion dollar debt adding up daily; a public school system failing to adequately educate our young; the disintegration — and redefinition — of the traditional family; and the blight of 60 million American children legally murdered through abortion with the Supreme Court’s approval in Roe v. Wade (1973).

Recently the coronavirus pandemic has helped many to recognize America and the world are in crisis. “The Return” aims to help people realize the nation’s deepest crisis is spiritual and moral — and that only by turning back to the God of the Bible can America and other nations be saved.

“We rely on the power of Christ’s blood in every situation and crisis,” Jessip said. “Applying Jesus’ blood isn’t just a one-time experience, it’s a daily need. We call on the power of his blood every time we need healing, peace of mind, cleansing from sin, and he answers us.”

Jessip and Cahn, who believe the window of opportunity for repentance in America may be closing, see the September 26 gathering as just the beginning of revival in “The Return” movement.

“We are in a critical time in America,” they write. “We have been warned. God in His mercy has afforded us a time of reprieve to turn and repent for our land to be spared from destruction. It’s a Nineveh moment! ‘The Return’ is a chance for America, 40 days prior to our next election, to turn back to God, just like Nineveh. ‘The Return’ is the gathering to spark a movement to gather, fast, pray and repent for our wickedness.”

Co-chairs of “The Return” Jonathan Cahn and Kevin Jessip have recorded a special video about the event, which already has over a million views. In addition, online resources are available, including videos and downloads for individuals, pastors and churches. Daily devotionals also encourage personal repentance and consecration.

“The Return” is for all believers who love the Lord from all denominations and backgrounds. “The Return” is set for 40 days before the presidential election, and on the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, in the days of America’s founding and dedication to God. Surrounding the “The Day of Return” on Sept. 26 at the Washington Mall will be 10 days, known from ancient times as the Days of Awe, to be set as a special time of prayer and repentance from Sept. 18-28.

Coordinated events within “The Return” movement will also take place throughout America’s cities, towns, houses of worship and homes, as well as in multiple countries around the world, as many believe the nation has been given a critical window of opportunity to repent and return to God.
