American Family Association: Gov. Tate Reeves Has Yet to Issue Executive Order to Ban Abortions in Mississippi During COVID-19 Emergency

TUPELO, Miss.—Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) has yet to issue the promised executive order banning non-essential, surgical and diagnostic procedures—including abortions—during the COVID-19 emergency. The reason for the ban is to conserve personal protective equipment (PPE), such as masks, gloves and gowns, and allocate these supplies to health care workers caring for those who may have the virus.

In a radio interview with Tim Wildmon, president of American Family Association (AFA, www.afa.net), Reeves said the order “should be done today.”

“Gov. Reeves has had the opportunity to ban elective abortions since at least March 19,” said Wildmon, “but for some reason the Republican governor has refused to act and ensure the protection of life.”

Rob Chambers, Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs for AFA, said, “The window of opportunity for Gov. Reeves to issue an executive order is closing. Once the supply of protective equipment for health care workers is no longer a critical issue, the window closes, as the order would be moot at that point.”

The abortion facility in Jackson, Mississippi, has remained unchallenged as it continues to operate as usual. Reports indicate the abortion facility is actually booming with business.

Women are coming from Texas seeking abortion because Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order has declared abortion as non-essential during this emergency. This is something Gov. Reeves has yet to do while more babies are being murdered.

Gov. Reeves has claimed, “We’re doing everything in our power, and have for many years, to make Mississippi the safest place in America for unborn children.”

Wildmon responded saying, “Gov. Reeves’ pro-life credentials are certainly called into question on this inaction of this simple matter.”
