Israel Reacts to the Attack on Pittsburgh Synagogue

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led a moment of silence to commemorate the lives lost in Saturday’s mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at Sunday morning’s cabinet meeting. Following this, he said “I call upon the whole world to unite in the fight against antisemitism everywhere. Today, regretfully, we refer to the United States, where the largest antisemitic crime in its history took place, but we also mean, of course, Western Europe, where there is a tough struggle against the manifestations of a new antisemitism.”

Relations Warming Between Israel and Arab States

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the honored guest of Sultan Sayyid Qaboos bin Said Al Said, leader of the Persian Gulf sheikdom of Oman, last Friday. The visit preceded a speech by Omani Foreign Minister Yousuf bin Alawi at the IISS Manama Dialogue security summit in Bahrain later in the day. “Israel is a state present in the region, and we all understand this,” Alawi said. The speech followed several other public displays of the growing warmth between Israel and the Sunni Arab world.

Gaza Border Tense Following Weekend Rocket Attacks

37 rockets were fired into Israel from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip overnight Friday and into Saturday morning. The IDF launched retaliatory strikes on 95 positions occupied by Islamist terror militias including Hamas and the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad group. No deaths or injuries were reported by either side and PIJ announced late Saturday morning that a truce had been agreed to.

Turkey Deploying Russian-built Air Defense System

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar announced on Thursday that the his country’s armed forces would begin building the infrastructure necessary for the deployment of the Russian-made S-400 air defense architecture in October 2019, despite intense opposition to the plan from the US and other NATO allies. In related news, leaders of Turkey, Russia, France, and Germany issued a joint statement in Istanbul on Saturday calling for a UN-backed political process to end the war in Syria.

Years ago, senior Labourites were heard to promote anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Nowadays conspiracy theories targeting Jews, Israel, and others are being heard once again in Labour circles.
