Is America a Christian Nation or Not?

"We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God." James Madison, U.S. President 1808-1817.

The country sure does not act godly…..Whenever I hear politicians say, “God Bless America,” I cringe, because I don’t always feel that they believe in God. I always ask myself, “Where is the fruit?” Paul’s writing about the fruit of the Spirit is found in Galatians 5: 22-23. In the New International Version of the Bible, these verses read: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

I am old to this world, I grew up in the late 50’s and 60’s. I have seen my country deteriorate so badly over the last 30 years. The moral fiber of America is being destroyed rapidly. George Barna research shows that just 4% of Americans have a Biblical Worldview. We see the results with all hell breaking loose across America. Americans killing Americans. We see it in our politics. Both parties are unruly. And many thought the threat to us was from overseas! The enemy has always been within. We see the downfall of our country in the downward trend of people who are attending Church. In May 2023, 31% of U.S. adults said they attended church in the past seven days, remaining below the 34% measured before the pandemic and the 40% measured in most years before 2013. From Gallup.

I keep a book in my office, right by my computer, ‘In God We Still Trust.” I strongly suggest you get a copy. I always trust my God. My Dad, Wally Moede, U.S. Marine SGT. in WW II, taught me to leave the world a better place. I am whispering to my Dad this morning, “Dad, it is very tough here, many Churches are not teaching the basics of Christianity, not baptizing people, not carrying out the Great Commission, I see failure of the Church in America, Dad. Many have turned into a Hollywood performance, enclosed by walls. I can hear Dad saying, “Many of us gave all we had in World War II to save not only America, but the world.” Yes, Dad, that keeps me going through thick and thin. I love you!

Character is not based upon one single act or another, but the sum total of the morals and values that make up the traits of a person or, in this case a nation. After all, America’s character was forged on the anvil of a belief in Almighty God and the virtues of the Christian faith. The fact alone serves a a wellspring of hope. Dr.  Richard G. Lee

Consider our roots for a moment:

“Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.” President George Washington’s Farwell Address in 1796.

“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” James Madison, U.S. President 1808-1817.

Does your Church even teach the Ten Commandments? Does your Church have them posted? Sadly, many, many Americans do not even know what they are!

The American people are fighting themselves. We are in a civil war. We are destroying ourselves. The Associated Press in their email news, had this story:

Many Americans believe the United States was founded as a Christian nation, and the idea is energizing some conservative and Republican activists. But the concept means different things to different people, and historians say that while the issue is complex, the founding documents prioritize religious freedom and do not create a Christian nation. Christian Historian Bill Federer posted this on October of 2021:

U.S. Supreme Court stated in the 1892 case of Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, written by Justice David Josiah Brewer (143 U.S. 457-458, 465-471, 36 L ed 226):

“This is a religious people. This is historically true. From the discovery of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation…”

From Focus on ther Family: A Biblical Worldview is based on the infallible Word of God. When you believe the Bible is entirely true, then you allow it to be the foundation of everything you say and do. That means, for instance, you take seriously the mandate in Romans 13 to honor the governing authorities by researching the candidates and issues, making voting a priority.

Do you have a Biblical Worldview? Answer the following questions, based on claims found in the Bible and which George Barna used in his survey:

    • Do absolute moral truths exist?
    • Is absolute truth defined by the Bible?
    • Did Jesus Christ live a sinless life?
    • Is God the all-powerful and all-knowing Creator of the universe, and does He still rule it today?
    • Is salvation a gift from God that cannot be earned?
    • Is Satan real?
    • Does a Christian have a responsibility to share his or her faith in Christ with other people?
    • Is the Bible accurate in all of its teachings?
