Years ago, Lynn was in a car accident that broke her neck and made her a quadriplegic. Like me, she depends on friends to help with her disability-routines. A couple of women from her church, as well as a few others from a local college arrive various mornings to get Lynn ready for the day. My friend keeps a planner open on her dresser where her helpers write down the days they assist. One morning, Lynn’s husband glanced at one girl’s scribblings: “Serve Lynn.” She didn’t write “Work for Lynn” or “Here’s my timecard,” but only one sweet word, “Serve.” Tears welled as he thought about the precious motive behind that word.
