Headlines from Jerusalem, 16 September 2019

“First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:1-4

TOP STORY

Leaders of Israel’s political factions were busy over the weekend, appearing at campaign events, giving interviews to media outlets and otherwise making a last-minute push to convince their supporters to go to the polls on Tuesday amidst fears of historically low turnout. Incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Army Radio Monday morning saying, among other things, that he is prepared to annex Kiryat Arba and the Jewish areas of Hebron should he be re-elected. The pledge came a day after he presided over a Cabinet meeting symbolically held in the Jordan Valley.

US Prepares to Respond to Attack on Saudi Arabia

US President Donald Trump Tweeted on Sunday evening that the US military is “locked and loaded” ready to respond to any further Iranian aggression following Saturday’s strike on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities which temporarily shut down 5.7 million barrels worth of production capacity, half of the Kingdom’s daily output and 5% of global output. Iranian officials angrily denied involvement in the attacks while begging to point out that the weekends events proved the need of the world for Iranian supplies and the inherent danger to the world economy of sanctioning the Islamic Republic.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu addressed a special meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah on Sunday, saying among other things that the plans recently put forward for Israel to annex West Bank settlement blocs and parts of the Jordan Valley were a “despicable” attempt by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to gain votes ahead of Tuesday’s elections. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz retorted that the regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “systematically violates human rights, brutally persecutes the Kurds, and supports the terrorists of Hamas. He is the last person who should be preaching morals to Israel.”

The Jordan Valley Is Waiting for Zionist Action
Gershon Hacohen, BESA

Beyond its unquestionable vitality for Israel’s security, the Jordan Valley in its full geographical scope can accommodate millions of Israelis and national infrastructure that cannot be compressed into the coastal plain.
