Governor Susana Martinez to Sign Legislation to Improve School Security

Santa Fe, NM – Today, Governor Susana Martinez announced she will sign legislation to keep schools safer across New Mexico. Senate Bill 239 sets aside up to $10 million for the next four years to go towards enhancing school security infrastructure and projects such as perimeter fencing, intercom systems, and single point-of-entry buildings.

“We must continue to do all we can to ensure our students and school staff are safe on school grounds – especially in the wake of recent tragedies and threats,” said Governor Martinez. “This legislation is important, however it is just one step in keeping our students safe at school. I encourage school districts to continue to collaborate with law enforcement and continue to implement other, innovative ways to keep their students and staff safe and secure.”

Starting this year, school districts and charter schools will be able to apply for these funds through the Public School Capital Outlay Council, which will be in charge of developing assessments and granting awards statewide for school security projects. The money in Senate Bill 239 will be in addition to funds for school security already provided in capital outlay and local funding options.

The Governor also recommended that school districts, school leaders, and community members find ways to work with retired law enforcement officers who still want to serve their community in order to make schools more secure and keep students safe.
