Israel Detects Hamas Terror Tunnels Under UN School

Israel announced on Friday that it had discovered a network of terror tunnels running beneath two schools in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and demanded that the UN “strongly and unequivocally condemn Hamas” and formally classify the group a “terrorist organization” as it already is classified by the US, Canada, EU and several other governments.

IDF Embarks on Massive Earthquake Drill

The IDF Home Front Command, in cooperation with the Israel Police and various other civil defense organizations and local municipalities began a four-day drill on Sunday meant to prepare for what geologists have said is the inevitability of a massive earthquake which could hit Israel any day. “Statistics show that a severe earthquake happens every 100 years, and so there is a chance we will face one soon,” a senior IDF officer said, adding that the training for responding to an earthquake would be useful for other contingencies as well.

Qatar Government Retains Former US Attorney General

The beleaguered Persian Gulf Emirate of Qatar retained the services of former US Attorney General John Ashcroft over the weekend, reportedly paying $2.5 million for his law firm to represent it for the next 90 days as it seeks to comply with various US requirements for the reporting of international financial transactions and other areas in which it has fallen under scrutiny by US agencies.

Israel Blesses the World

Researchers at Hadassah-University Medical Center in Jerusalem announced over the weekend that they have discovered a link between Metformin, a drug used to treat type-2 diabetes, and the delay and even prevention of certain types of breast cancer recurrence. The research was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Elsewhere, Jerusalem’s Hebrew University announced this week that it will soon open a new center for neurological treatment and research.

Senior PA Official Donates Money to Rambam Hospital

A senior Palestinian Authority official, identified only as “M” to protect his privacy, has donated tens of thousands of shekels to Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center after he was treated there for cancer, one of approximately 1,200 Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip treated at the hospital every year. His donation is slated to be put toward construction of a recovery ward in the Oncology department.
