Contraband Bibles

Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. — John 17:17

“The government doesn’t know about these Bibles, and we will not let them know,” Pastor Ho said.

The pastor was among a group of Chinese Christians who traveled outside the country – many switching trains or taking several buses to avoid being tracked – for the purpose of smuggling study Bibles back in for church members who needed them. Although the Chinese government prints Bibles, they don’t print study Bibles with notes, commentaries and other tools to help believers better understand God’s Word. And they don’t print enough for every Christian who needs one.

Every Bible smuggled into China by these brothers and sisters was illegal contraband, but each one will deeply benefit the growing Chinese church.

Pastor Ho believes the study Bibles will help preachers in China spread God’s Word so more people will believe in Jesus. And as more come to know Jesus, more will need Bibles. Chinese Christians are willing to take great risks in order to smuggle and own illegal Bibles, including the risk of beatings, torture and imprisonment.

The Voice of the Martyrs has collected the names of tens of thousands of Christians who need a Bible. When you sponsor Bibles through VOM’s “We Know Them by Name” campaign, we will send you the names of those who receive Bibles you sponsor so you can pray for them as they begin to read and share God’s Word.

We know their names. We know they need Bibles. Help us meet the need of believers like Pastor Ho and many others.
