Albuquerque Editorial Board: UNM Health Sciences Faulty Logic, Should Comply With Congressional Select Panel on Infant Lives

Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico Alliance for Life has been pointing out from the outset of the Congressional Select Investigative Panel on Infant Live’s investigation into practices involving fetal tissue harvesting, the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center’s (UNMHSC) excuses for withholding information are part of a continued pattern of not cooperating with open records requests and not operating with a level of transparency expected of a taxpayer funded-institution. The need for transparency is now being echoed by the Albuquerque Journal, the paper of record where the UNMHSC is located.  Read the full Albuquerque Journal Editorial: Fetal tissue inquiry within purview of House panel.

“The researchers involved in experiments on aborted infant organs and parts harvested from Albuquerque’s late-term abortion clinic are already publicly named in the studies, therefore we are not buying UNMHSC’s Paul Roth’s claims of “protecting staff” as an excuse for evading congressional subpoenas–evasions happening well before the congressional panel began its investigation,” said Elisa Martinez, executive director of New Mexico Alliance for Life. “These are serious matters involving human lives, harvesting of human organs and potential violations of the law– above and beyond profiteering from the purchase and sale of infant body parts, and the public has a right to know what is taking place and demand cooperation with the investigation.”
The continued shroud of secrecy surrounding the University’s use of aborted infant organs and body parts gives the appearance that Dr. Paul Roth, head of the UNMHSC and his staff have something to hide. The Albuquerque Journal has highlighted the faulty logic of UNMHSC in withholding information from the panel, “if the logic used by Health Sciences was followed, many identities would be withheld from the public.  For example, the public would never know the name of a police officer involved in a shooting because a case for officer safety could be made. But cops can’t expect that kind of anonymity and neither should people who sign up and get paid for doing this kind of research.”
