Switching roles from doctor to patient by Dr. Michelle Bengtson

You know it’s bad when a doctor gives up her role as the doctor to both her family and her private practice patients to become the patient herself.

Recently illness overcame my entire family prior to and during a much-anticipated vacation over spring break. I was the last hold-out. Unfortunately, this virus or cold was much worse for me. My symptoms did not improve as they had for my family so I headed to a medical center for a checkup. My Good Friday diagnosis: full-blown pneumonia.

My body continues to fight with each painful breath. When sickness comes calling, I remember three things.

1. When you choose to be obedient to God’s call on your life, there will be warfare to fight. Even though the pain is intense and each breath is a hard-fought battle, I will not give up that easily. I’m equipped with strength for the battle.

For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. (Psalm 18:39 ESV)

2. By Jesus’ stripes, I am healed. My Lord has already won. He has the victory.

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

3. Rest is crucial for warfare. This battle is not just a physical illness, but also a spiritual battle. I’m under doctor’s orders to rest.

Mark 6:31 (NIV) says, “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.””

In the stillness, God speaks.

When I am still and at rest, I hear the still small voice of God.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! Psalm 46:10

The doctor’s orders for me are bed-rest, medication, fluids and no work for the next week.

I’m equipped with strength for battle. I am healed. I will rest. And, the enemy will be defeated again.

Are you facing challenges that will prepare you for future battles?
