Choosing Life Over Death

Literally the word means to live again. When someone dies momentarily and we are able to bring him or her back using CPR or some other form of intervention we say they were revived, they live again.

Have you wondered why zombies are becoming popular again? Think about it. There are television shows such as “I, Zombie” and “The Walking Dead”. There are too many movies to name. Zombies even show up in the news from time to time these days and there are even zombie apps taking over the various app stores.

Let’s face it, zombies are popular.

But why? Why is there suddenly this fascination with zombies?

I believe it is because zombies are a metaphor for our spiritual condition and as this world separates itself from God even more, the metaphor becomes more apt.

The Bible informs us that the wages of sin are death. This means that when we reject the Lord and his ways, we die. Not laying in the morgue kind of dead, but really the walking dead.

The storyline for zombies is that they have been infected by some sort of disease that causes them to become undead, creatures that are walking around without morality and looking to fill their selfish desire brains, which in turn kills and destroys others and usually creates more zombies.

Sound familiar?

The good news is that unlike many of the television shows and movies about zombies, for us, there is a cure. That cure is salvation through Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that while we are dead in our sins, the Lord sends the Holy Spirit to bring us life, to give us the choice of accepting or rejecting the cure of being dead.

Ultimately, this all boils down to us being given a choice. It is quite literally a life or death choice. But one that we must freely choose.

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.” –Deuteronomy 30:15-16

At the end of his life, Moses wanted to remind the people of God of what the source of life really is. Life, abundant life is found in obedience to the Lord. We truly live when we obey Him, specifically His commandments.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” -John 14:15

Jesus stated that true love of God was found in obedience to God, notice that Moses made the same assertion that loving the Lord, keeping His commandments brings life.

So what then is revival? Revival is heeding the call of the Holy Spirit to commit our lives to the Lord not just in word, but also in deed. It is the call to hear and obey the Lord and thereby show that we love Him.

We are told in 1 John that if we love God we will keep His commands and that if we say that we love our brother in Christ, we will keep the commands of God.

Therefore the way we keep the greatest commandments, to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our mind, and with all our soul, to love our neighbor as ourselves is to obey God and walk in His ways.

This begs the question you must be asking yourself, do you love the Lord enough to obey Him?
