Why study the Bible? What’s in It for me?

study BibleSomebody once asked me why one should study the Bible; what good would it do them.  Since my opinion has little importance as everyone has one… I decided the best way to answer that question was WITH the Word itself.  Let’s look at the scriptures and remind ourselves of the importance of the Word:

THE WORD IS GOD.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

IT IS OUR INSTRUCTION MANUAL.

2 Timothy 3:6-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

IT GIVES UNDERSTANDING TO THE SIMPLE.

Psalm 119:130 The unfolding of Your Word gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

IT IS A LAMP AND A LIGHT.

Psalm 119:105 Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

IT ENDURES FOREVER.

1 Peter 1:25 and Isaiah 40:8 The Word of the Lord endures forever.

WE WILL BE APPROVED BY GOD.

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of Truth.

IT PERFORMS ITS WORK IN BELIEVERS.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the Word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the Word of God, which performs its work in you who believe.

IT IS OUR OFFENSIVE WEAPON.

Hebrews 4:12 For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the Helmet of Salvation, the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

WORD BECAME FLESH = JESUS

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. (Jesus!)

Revelation 19:13 … His Name is called The Word of God. (Jesus!)

IT IS OUR SPIRITUAL FOOD. (PROVIDES AND SUSTAINS LIFE)

Matthew 4:4 (Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3) But He answered and said, “It is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”

WE ARE SANCTIFIED BY IT.

John 17:17 (Jesus’ prayer for us) Sanctify them in the Truth; Your Word is Truth.

WE WILL NOT BE DECEIVED BECAUSE OF IT.

Mark 12:24 (Jesus answers the Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes) Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the scriptures or the power of God?”

IT WILL NOT RETURN VOID.

Isaiah 55:11 So will My Word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.

IT INCREASES OUR FAITH.

Romans 10:17 Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

So……. if this isn’t enough to remind us of the importance of studying God’s Word, and if this isn’t enough of an answer to that question, “what’s in it for me?” …..  then you’ll have to read what my next installation is, because you are lacking something very important!!  :)
