Abbas Meets With Obama

Abbas and Obama at the White House (White House photograph)Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas visited the White House in Washington on Monday, declaring that “we don’t have any time to waste. Time is not on our side, especially given the very difficult situation that the Middle East is experiencing and the entire region is facing.” He also hinted that past recognitions of Israel as the Jewish State by former PLO leader Yasser Arafat and other “international legitimacy resolutions” since 1988 settled the issue and made another specific statement of recognition unnecessary. “This was a very courageous step on the part of the Palestinian leadership,” Abbas stated. “And in 1993, we recognized the State of Israel.” Abbas went on to list several other Palestinian demands including a “fair and lasting solution to the refugee problem.” Read More
