Turkey Intercepts Norwegian Natural Gas Exploration Ship

Turkey and Cyprus (Illustrative)In a blatant attempt to intimidate its Eastern Mediterranean neighbors, Turkey’s government recently ordered one of its naval vessels to intercept a Norwegian natural gas exploration ship off the coast of Cyprus, in waters that Turkey claims as its Exclusive Economic Zone. The incident was the latest indication that Turkey is not concerned by the lack of recognition of its military occupation of the northern third of the island nation of Cyprus, and related claims to the natural gas deposits off that country’s coasts which the internationally recognized government in Nicosia claims as its own. In related news, reports have surfaced recently of a deal between Turkey and Israel for a resolution of ongoing claims related to the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident.
