Return, O Lord, rescue my soul (Ps 6:4)

The Heb. verb halas translated “rescue” has the primary meaning “to prepare, to deliver, to equip for war. The primary meaning of the word is that of strengthening or fortifying.”We usually think that being rescued involves someone else coming to save us. Jesus has already done that – if you’re a believer you already stand complete and victorious in Him. It is better for us to know that the Lord intends for us to be strengthened – prepared and equipped for the battle that we know is coming and which lays ahead – by returning to Him as our source of strength and deliverance. Instead of being “passive” in our response to impending danger, we should be “active” in seeking the Lord – allowing Him to prepare us for deliverance and victory over our enemies.  This same word is used for “taking up arms for battle (Num. 31:3, 32:17) or preparing for a general state of military readiness (Josh. 4:13, 2 Chr 17:18).”  (WSOTDICT)

Our victory is in the Lord, and it is He that “trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.” (Ps 144:1)  Be strengthened in the Lord – actively seek Him out to be prepared for what lies ahead, and He will deliver you from your enemies.
