BRIEF: Officials rule cause of Texas fertilizer plant fire undetermined; investigation will remain open

According to the official investigation, the physical origin of the fire was the “seed room.”

A battery-operated golf cart was in the seed room. “There is a history of golf carts starting fires… because we have not found all the pieces of the golf cart… we cannot eliminate it as cause of fire at this time.”

The investigation found there was no fire prior to blast at the plant. Eliminated causes include: ammonium nitrate, smoke, weather; NOT ruled out as causes: electrical system, a golf cart onsite, intentionally set fire.

There were two explosions, “milliseconds apart” — two seismic events recorded.

There are no missing persons in the investigation. It took about a month for investigators to locate all locals, other individuals.

Water system was operating in “normal mode” and was “not compromised”

Cost of investigation: over 20,000 personnel hours at about $1 million and 104 persons, not including other counties, DA, Highway Patrol, Texas Rangers, Parks & Wildlife, other agencies. About 500 persons interviewed.
