The advisory was issued due to the magnitude 8.2 earthquake that hit off the coast of Chile yesterday. The powerful quake created a tsunami that hit the northern part of that country. at least 6 people are dead. There are reports of landslides partially blocking some highways and roads, but no major structural damage in Chile.

Massive Quake Kills 5 In Chile, Spawns Tsunami

(Undated) — Emergency teams are checking for more damage today after a massive earthquake off the coast of Chile triggered a tsunami and killed at least five people Tuesday night. The magnitude 8.2 quake hit about 60 miles north of the mining town of Iquique [[ ih-KEE-keh ]]. About 300 inmates escaped from a prison there in the quake’s aftermath. Emergency officials evacuated people from several port cities and tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas of Southern and Central America. However, those warnings were cancelled a few hours later.

Chile’s Copper Mines Inspected For Earthquake Damage

(Angamos, Chile) — Chilean officials are inspecting the country’s copper mines following Tuesday’s massive magnitude 8.2 earthquake. Chile is the world’s number one copper producer, and officials say it initially appears the country’s major mines were undamaged. Workers in Angamos, a key copper port, were evacuated as a precaution. Parts of northern Chile have been declared disaster zones by President Michelle Bachelet.
