Time is of the essence for Ukraine. Russia’s war against Ukraine has now lasted longer than World War I. This is such a very sad statement. It’s tragic that the United States is not doing more to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to return all of the Ukrainian children Russian forces have kidnapped!
I am no fan at all of U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s foreign policies. Pay attention to the munitions shortage. According to the National Review, the proximate cause of the shortages is the Iran war and the cumulative effect of smaller campaigns beforehand such as that against the Houthis. But the underlying reason is that the U.S. has skimped on weapons acquisition and has been handicapped by self-defeating Pentagon procurement practices for a very, long time. In the years after the Cold War, the working rule was that the U.S. must be prepared to fight two simultaneous wars against smaller opponents, but we effectively abandoned that standard and have relied on rosy scenarios about potential conflicts to justify acquiring insufficient munitions.

The Associated Press (“AP News”) reports that the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved a punishing Russian sanctions package yesterday (8/7/2026), which was the result of a yearlong campaign by the late Senator Lindsey Graham to reinforce U.S. support for Ukraine and try to force Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hand as the grinding war drags on.
The bipartisan legislation, which passed 86-11, would penalize countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas and other exports seeking to deprive Putin of revenues fueling the war. It comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the United States last week following Senator Graham’s funeral, when he met with senators from the Democratic and Republican Parties, and watched from the gallery as the Senate took the first procedural votes.
