Parents eagerly greeted their kids coming back from their Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness trips at the YMCA White Bear Lake parking lot on Thursday (7/16/2026).
Many hugged, some wiped away tears.
Esme Lior, 14, of Arizona, said she had to be rescued by the U.S. Forest Service while she was on, what was supposed to be, a two-week trip. The fire moved so fast that the group had to leave all their gear behind.
Air quality warnings were upgraded for the metro area and a large swath of Minnesota to the highest level on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s six-level warning system. At least 15 fires continued to rage in northeast Minnesota and scores more burned in Ontario amid a blistering heat wave. More Here
