A Pastoral Statement on Women in Ministry and the Unity of the Church

Beloved in Christ,

In recent days, many conversations in the wider Body of Christ — and sometimes even among dear friends — have grown tense around the question of women serving as pastors or preaching in the gathered church.  Because this topic touches Scripture, calling, and conscience, it is understandable that people feel it deeply.  But as God’s called shepherd and peacemaker, I want to speak a word of clarity, peace, and unity.

First, let us affirm together that Scripture is our final authority.  We do not build our convictions on culture, tradition, or personal preference.  We stand under the Word of God, trusting that it is good, wise, and sufficient.

Second, let us affirm the full dignity, gifting, and value of women in the Kingdom of God.  From Genesis to Revelation, God undeniably used women in powerful ways — as prophets, teachers, leaders, evangelists, intercessors, and faithful servants of Christ.  The Holy Spirit distributes gifts without regard to gender, and the Church is impoverished when any believer’s gifts are diminished or dismissed.

Third, let us acknowledge that faithful Christians, equally committed to Scripture, interpret certain passages differently.  Some emphasize the passages that speak of order and elder qualifications.  Others emphasize the passages that show women teaching, prophesying, and leading.  Both sets of passages are in the Bible.  Both deserve our attention.  And believers who love Jesus and honor Scripture can and will come to different conclusions.

Fourth, let us commit to discussing this matter with humility, patience, and love.  The goal is not to win an argument but to honor Christ.  The measure of our maturity is not uniformity of opinion but unity of heart.  Jesus said the world would know we are His disciples by our love — not by our agreement on every secondary issue.

Finally, let us remember that our mission is greater than our disagreements.  We are called to preach Christ, make disciples, baptize them, love our neighbors, and shine as lights in a dark world.  The enemy (evil one) would love nothing more than to distract the Church with internal battles.  But we will not give him that victory.  We will walk in grace, truth, and peace.

May the LORD give us wisdom as we study His Word, tenderness as we speak to one another, and unity as we follow Christ together.

In His love and for His glory, Pastor Jerry.

“LORD Jesus, You are the Prince of Peace.  Make us gentle, humble, and eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit.  Give us clarity without harshness, conviction without pride, and love that reflects Your heart.  Lead us into truth and keep us in Your grace.  Amen.”
