CNN reports that U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a deal today (2/3/2025) to delay the initiation of tariffs by one month after Mexico agreed to send 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border to help reduce the flow of fentanyl into the United States, reinforce the border, and to help improve security in Mexico.

At a morning news conference today, President Sheinbaum said that “for humanitarian reasons, we must help the United States address its fentanyl consumption crisis, which is leading to overdose deaths.”

On Saturday (2/1/2025), President Trump announced new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China.  The tariffs were scheduled to take effect Tuesday and included a 25% duty on all imports from Mexico.

My brothers and sisters, so many are so quick to look for reasons to find fault with President Trump’s early and aggressive moves, but it strikes this writer that many, whether willfully or not, seem to forget that he’s already been president for four years, and has had four additional years to prepare and make any adjustments to his approach during the Biden administration.

Bluster alone will never ‘win the day’ and does not reflect true confidence nor project strength, but Trump’s foreign policy views (which are often overlapping with policies affecting domestic and economic issues) are not simply ‘dreamt up’ ideas rushed to the political forefront, but views generated over a lifetime of successful business operations and observations or strategic moves based on actual time as president.

Perfect?  Far from it!  But, then again, none of us are, as every man has fallen short of the glory of God!

Romans 3:23 (NKJV)
“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”.

That acknowledged, with more meetings scheduled with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this afternoon regarding pending tariffs, it’s clear that the leaders of Canada and Mexico understand that the United States is not simply posturing, but is capable and willing to follow through with what it says.  That is an attribute which generally garners respect and leads to graciousness on all sides – at least in the world of international politics.

May God’s wisdom and love guide all of our elected and appointed leaders to work for what is best for all the people, and not simply a one-sided-only view of life and government.  May peace and goodwill exist and grow between the North American countries of Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The Bible tells us that peace comes through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, despite the tribulation of world affairs and the temptation to become fearful.  We serve the One who has “overcome the world!”

John 14:27 (NKJV)
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

John 16:33 (NKJV)
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Praise Jesus forevermore!
