Fox News reports this morning (1/17/2025) that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (“PAFACA”), which was passed by the U.S. Congress in April 2024 and gave Chinese-owned TikTok nine months to either divest from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or be removed from United States app stores and hosting services.

Congress’ concerns involve Chinese ownership of the hugely popular app, which includes potential for the app to be weaponized or used to amass vast amounts of user data from the roughly 170 million Americans who use TikTok.

According to CNN, the TikTok ban goes into effect on this Sunday, January 19, 2025.  Today’s CNN article may be read HERE.

In an April 24, 2024 article, CBS News addressed the passage of the PAFACA, citing U.S. officials who say that because Chinese national security laws require organizations to cooperate with intelligence gathering, TikTok is a threat to the national security of the United States and may collect massive amounts of personal information for use by the Chinese Communist Party – with the fear that the Chinese government might compromise Americans’ devices through the TikTok software.

U.S. Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX), who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that “[t]his app [TikTok] is a spy balloon in Americans’ phones” that is “used to surveil and exploit Americans’ personal information.”

My brothers and sisters, like most things in today’s politically-divided society, there is no overarching consensus as to the best course of action regarding TikTok, although this writer, who hasn’t forgotten or looked the other way regarding the communist threat from countries such as China and Russia, understands that the U.S. Congress was designed to address such matters and that most of the critical information undergirding the PAFACA is likely classified.  You and I are most unlikely to ever know much of what brings concern to Congress.

Regardless of what happens regarding TikTok, we should remember that China and Russia (and other similar communist or dictatorially-led countries) do not have the best interests of the United States in mind!  This may sound simple or paranoid, but be assured, it is not.

Let’s pray for all of our governmental leaders, that they would walk in godly wisdom in such matters, including President-elect Trump, who has recently expressed concern about the law limiting or banning the TikTok app.

Patriotism has been maligned in recent years, but I am still very thankful for the blessing of living in the United States.  I see how God has blessed the United States for the betterment of not only our people, but historically, for all nations.

I pray that our leaders are, or will become, followers of Jesus!  The wisdom of the world is foolishness to God, but how perfect is the wisdom which flows from children of God who have ears to hear and eyes to see!

1 Timothy 2:1-3 (ESV)
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.  This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior…”.

1 Corinthians 3:18-19 (NKJV)
“Let no one deceive himself.  If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.  For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their own craftiness…’”.

Praise Jesus forevermore!
