The Justice Department wants federal prosecutors across the country to investigate state or local officials who obstruct immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s new administration, according to a new memo obtained by Fox News.

In the memo, Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, Trump’s former defense attorney, outlines “interim decisions and policy changes” pending the confirmation of Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi. He said interim changes are necessary as an initial response to Trump’s executive orders regarding “three of the most serious threats facing the American people.”

Those threats, Bove wrote, are cartels and other transnational criminal organizations, such as Tren de Aragua (TdA) and La Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), which “are a scourge on society resulting in an unstable and unsafe border and huge flows of illegal immigration in violation of U.S. law.” The memo said the second threat is how “brutal and intolerable violent crime by members of these organizations and illegal aliens is escalating rapidly across the country.” The third threat defined by Bove is how the “fentanyl crisis and opioid epidemic are poisoning our communities and have inflicted an unprecedented toll of addiction, suffering, and death.” More Here

RPNM Condemns NM Democrats’ Second Rejection of the Laken Riley Act

ALBUQUERQUE, JANUARY 7—Today, Congress successfully passed the Laken Riley Act, with unanimous support from Republicans and 48 Democrats backing the legislation. However, New Mexico’s Democrat representatives—Gabe Vasquez, Melanie Stansbury, and Teresa Leger Fernandez—once again voted against this vital legislation. Their decision to oppose the Laken Riley Act, designed to protect New Mexicans from the consequences of an open border, is particularly disturbing for representatives of a border state. This bill is crucial for holding illegal immigrants accountable for their crimes and preventing future victims.

The Laken Riley Act, named in memory of a tragic victim of crime, nursing student Laken Riley, who was killed by an illegal immigrant while jogging at the University of Georgia, has been brought forth in the 119th Congress as an urgent response to ongoing border violence and crime. This legislation represents a decisive step towards ensuring that criminals who take advantage of the open border and then commit crimes in our country are able to be detained and deported.

In response to the representatives’ vote, Ash Soular, a spokeswoman for the Republican Party of New Mexico, stated, “The Democrat Party has made it clear they stand in complete contrast to the Republican Party when it comes to crime and border security. All three Democrat representatives, and also including Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, want a New Mexico where illegal immigrants can commit vicious crimes like murder, rape and theft without fear of punishment. The refusal of our Democrat representatives to support the Laken Riley Act, not once but twice, sends a dangerous message that they prioritize the interests of those who break our laws over the citizens they are supposed to protect. Republicans support ending the lawless open border, reinforcing legal immigration pathways, and putting the needs of New Mexicans first.”

As crime rates continue to soar and communities face increasing threats, the call for stronger immigration enforcement has never been more urgent and New Mexico Republicans will continue to prioritize legislation that protects our communities and holds criminals accountable in the upcoming legislative session.

RPNM Response to Governor Lujan Grisham’s State of the State Address

SANTA FE, JANUARY 21— In response to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s State of the State address this afternoon, Republican Party of New Mexico Chair Amy Barela issued the following statement:

“While we acknowledge the governor’s sentiment that New Mexicans deserve better, her same approach of throwing more money at the many issues in our state has not produced results. Over her 6-year tenure, the state budget has increased by approximately 73%, yet critical areas like education and child welfare remain last in the nation. We have yet to see substantial progress in The Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD).

“While the governor briefly acknowledged the record oil and gas revenues, she once again failed to thank the oil and gas industry for contributing nearly half of our state’s budget while proposing legislation that threatens to eliminate this vital sector by 2050.

“She introduced the idea of a tax credit for businesses to combat crime, but she ignored the Paid Family Leave Act, which would force many small businesses to close or relocate out of state.

“We appreciate the governor’s recognition of the crime crisis plaguing our cities. She mentioned some “common sense” policies like reforming the competency laws to keep repeat offenders behind bars, but what she didn’t mention is that these are also Republican policies that Democrats have repeatedly killed year after year. We are hopeful that the governor and the progressive Democrats in the legislature will finally back these critical pieces of legislation this year.

“Immigration, a critical issue for New Mexico as a border state, was notably absent from her speech. New Mexico cannot continue to be a hub for those exploiting our open borders to bring crime and deadly drugs like fentanyl into our communities.

“We urge the Democrats in the legislature to prioritize the issues that matter to New Mexicans this year. The Republican Party of New Mexico remains committed keeping our citizens informed about their legislators’ votes throughout this session.”
