Haiti – A Failed Nation In Crisis

CNN reports that the situation in Haiti, and especially in Port-au-Prince, has deteriorated sharply.  Prime Minister Ariel Henry has stepped aside, but it’s not clear who will fill the leadership void or when, with plans for a Kenyan-led stabilization force in limbo.

Henry came to power in 2021 following the assassination of Haiti’s then-President Jovenel Moïse.  Henry’s tenure was marred by months of spiraling gang violence, which grew more intense after he failed to hold elections last month, citing the potential for a compromised election because of the ongoing insecurity in Haiti.

Port-au-Prince residents leave their homes only rarely, as daily battles between police and gangs result in gunshots and plumes of smoke, with streets typically packed with cars and vendors empty.

My brothers and sisters, the situation in Haiti is so severe, it’s hard to know what to even say or think anymore.  The undeniable fact is that the evil one has a grip on the nation and many of its inhabitants, as scripture makes it clear that the evil one exists to steal, kill and destroy (see John 10:10).  Despite many years of international aid and efforts to unite the country’s population, nothing has worked.  The answer, of course, is the Answer, and His name is Jesus!

Between political kerfuffles ongoing in the United States and other western nations; war raging in Ukraine and Israel; weakened governments, fighting and/or religious intolerance within many nations of the African continent; saber rattling (including threats of the use of nuclear arms) by Russia and North Korea, and the continuing unrest in Haiti, it’s well past time to consider that the answer to man’s problems is not going to be found in the wisdom of the world (see 1 Corinthians 1:18 and 3:19)!

The battle being fought in Haiti, like so many other places in the world, is spiritual (see Ephesians 6:12), and as believers, the best (and sometimes the only available) response is to pray (see Philippians 4:6-7).  Prayer moves mountains, because with God, all things are possible (see Matthew 19:26).

Let’s pray that God would move upon the hearts of the Haitian people to seek peace, not death.  It is the will of God that ALL would come to know Jesus as Lord (see 1 Timothy 2:4-6)!

Here are the above-referenced scriptures:

John 10:10 (NKJV)
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.  I [Jesus] have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

1 Corinthians 1:18 (NKJV)
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 3:19 (NLT)
“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.  As the [s]criptures say, ‘He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.’”

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, [and] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV)
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Matthew 19:26 (NKJV)
“But Jesus looked at them and said to them, ‘[w]ith men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”

1 Timothy 2:4-6 (NKJV)
God Desires All To Be Saved
“[God our Savior] desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.  For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all…”.

Praise Jesus forevermore!
