What Does Scripture Say About Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide?

Op-Ed Contributor William Wolfe, writing for The Christian Post, says that legalized euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (“PAS”) are both on the rise in Western countries, including the United States (“US”) and Canada.  Christians and medical ethicists have long warned that these actions are frequently justified and sold as “mercy in dying” or “dignity in death,” and are a slippery slope.

For example, Canada has aggressively expanded its pro-death regime known as Medical Assistance In Dying (“MAID”) with statistics showing that medically-assisted deaths in the country rose by 35% from 2020 to 2021.  Of particular concern is that beginning in March 2024, Canada will extend the MAID program to include those whose sole medical condition justifying euthanasia or PAS is mental illness (e.g., depression, post-traumatic stress syndrome or schizophrenia) and is reportedly considering allowing “mature minors” to be eligible for the program.

My brothers and sisters, this is one of the most shocking and sickening developments of our recent times!  As if killing unborn babies weren’t enough, now we are going to allow and attempt to normalize the voluntary termination of life by those who may be suffering with mental distress, to include even teenagers!  Shame on any medical practitioner who participates in the sin of ending human life instead of working to save human lives.

It’s not our job to decide for God when we or others should pass into eternity.  We were made in the image and likeness of God.  He knew us before we were ever formed in our mothers’ wombs, and has already numbered and recorded every day of our lives.

If there was ever a case of calling good evil and evil good, this is it.

Here is some scripture for consideration:

Psalm 139:13-16 (NLT)
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.  Thank [Y]ou for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.  You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.  You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in [Y]our book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”

Exodus 20:13 (NKJV)
“You shall not murder.”

1 Corinthians 3:19 (NKJV)
“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.  For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their own craftiness…’”.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NKJV)
“And [Jesus] said to [Paul], ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’  Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake.  For when I am weak, then I am strong (emphasis mine).”

Isaiah 5:20 (NKJV)
“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; [w]ho put darkness for light, and light for darkness; [w]ho put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Praise Jesus forevermore!
