Healing past hurts

Thus says the Lord, “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; indeed, I will heal you.

2 King’s 20:5

Emotional hurts can be extremely debilitating and can cause detrimental pain. It may come in the form of abuse, past hurts or any number of other ways.

Unfortunately, these types of hurts or wounds can heal much slower than physical injuries. Sometimes it even feels like our healing may never come.

When I was 18, I went through some severe trauma. It wasn’t until recently that I actually allowed God to start my healing. It should never have taken this long to mend. I was stubborn and the bottom line came down to me not trusting and believing God for this healing.

(Their actions towards me can be forgiven, not excused.)

I believe that this particular issue of distrust in God, was sin on my part because His desire was to bring upon me healing and wholeness, and it starts with me coming to God and leaving my hurts at Jesus’ feet. As it should be with all of us. Easier said than done though.

Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.”

You see, I felt like I probably deserved this. That thought was what some call “stinkin thinkin” and that “stinkin’ thinkin” lead to “drinkin” And then, I had a whole set of different problems! Which God also healed.

The God of the universe is waiting to heal you.

There’s proof that God has helped heal the faithful since the very beginning and all we have to do is ask him.

“Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.”

John 16:24

Once we become a Christian we actually become new creations in Christ. Our slates are wiped clean, and we get a fresh start, a new story and we get to choose the characters, If we allow God to work in us, and allow Him to raise us.

I use to rehearse my past hurts, and that just brought up painful memories that were detrimental to my heart. I allowed my yesterday to define who I was today. Hoarding old sin and shame, only hindered the blessings and peace that God wanted for me.

Today, I’m free from that past hurt. I’m extremely blessed by that!

Philippians 3 13-14 says it best: Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Whatever your past hurts are, God wants you to leave them at the foot of the cross.

He wants you to move forward and away from the past. There’s hope there. So stop looking back, you’re not going that way. Look forward because the road in front of you is what counts. Where you’ve been doesn’t matter.

This is what Zophar told Job, at some point while he was suffering the pain of abuse.

“Put your heart right. Reach out to God. Put away any evil and wrong from your home. Then face the world again, firm and courageous. … Your life will be brighter than sunshine at noon, and life’s darkest hours will shine like the dawn!”

Job 11:13-17

Childhood trauma is especially hard because you had no choice in the matter. We must take it all to Christ and get the weight off our shoulders. It’s too big a burden to carry, even as adults.

Jesus knows fully our pain, He experienced every form of suffering when he was in the world.

“He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief”

Isaiah 53:3

Because Jesus came to earth to dwell with us, he experienced all the human suffering that we’ve experienced.

He was betrayed and tortured, he also did not deserve that. He is well acquainted with your grief, and he will never leave you or abandon you.

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Our hurts and abuse aren’t forgotten, they are redeemed!

Therefore, let the redeemed of the Lord say so.

Psalm 107:2

Please remember though, if your pain and hurts are too overwhelming, please seek counseling.

My prayer for you today is that you’d allow God to start the healing process.

Many blessings,

Connie
