What is your Desire

What is your Desire

Devotion in Motion
Psalm 27:4
“One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple”.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the things of this world. We can invest so much time and effort in the seeking of and in the fulfillment of our pleasures and desires. All you have  to do is turn on the television and you are immediately, and even subconsciously, bombarded by all the things that the world is telling us that you need. You’re being told that all the cool people are driving this model of car and that all the beautiful people are wearing this latest fashion. Whatever tickles your fancy… go for it!

Now I don’t think there is anything wrong with doing some research on your next purchase, but I want to encourage you to pay attention to the one thing that is really important. Listen to what King David had to say.

King David said, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple. (Psalm 27:4)

Beloved, are we seeking after those things that the world has to offer, or are we seeking after something greater? There is an old song that says…“This world is not my home, I’m just a-passin’ through. My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue.”

God tells us in Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (NIV)

Oh to dwell in the house of the Lord, to behold His beauty… You can’t get that at Amazon.com! You can only find it in Jesus Christ. Jesus said in the gospel of John ” If you do not believe that “I Am” you will perish in your sins” “I Am” was the OT covenant name of God between him and the people of Israel. He gave that name to Moses, when Moses asked him who he should say sent him to them and the Lord said “Tell them I am that I am has sent you”  It’s interesting that Jesus also used That same covenant name to describe himself when the religious rulers began to mock him.

He said in John 8:56-59″
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”  Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”  Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, “I AM.”
Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
They picked up stones to throw because they knew what the implication was of what Jesus said. He was setting himself on the same level as God, the only way to get to heaven is through Jesus Christ who is God the Son. The 2nd person of the Holy Trinity. To know God and to behold the Beauty of God is to spend time with Jesus Christ.

Remember Jesus told Philip, in John 14:7-9  “Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

If you have seen me you have seen the Father”

To behold the beauty of God is to behold Jesus Christ.
To dwell in his presence is to receive him into your heart
to inquire is to spend time with him in his word and prayer.

It’s been said “He paid a price he didn’t owe because we owed a price we couldn’t pay.  Remember true joy can never be found in things which are here today and gone tomorrow. It is only found in the one, whose beauty and whose perfect love is shed upon us broadly every day.
And that is in the Person of Jesus Christ!

Amen
