What Do You Do When You’re Angry?

PRAY OVER THIS

“The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression.”

PONDER THIS

Sudden anger is to be controlled. How do we control it? As a starting place, we have to confess it. Sudden anger is to be controlled. You may say that you’re not angry, but your stomach keeps the score. You’d be surprised what kinds of physiological, psychological, and spiritual problems occur when you have repressed anger or even expressed anger that is not handled properly.

When you find these feelings coming, confess them instead of repressing them. Bring it to the Lord and say, “There’s something moving in me that I don’t like.” Someone has said repressing anger is like lighting a wastebasket, putting it in a closet, and closing the door. It may burn itself out or it may burn the house down. The very first thing you need to do is open the closet door and say, “There it is Lord. That’s my wastebasket, and I set it on fire.”

  • What things cause you to burn with sudden anger?
  • How likely are you to turn to the Lord in these moments? How might you begin to do this if you don’t already?

PRACTICE THIS

Make a list of ways you’ve been sinfully angered in recent days. Confess these things before the Lord and ask Him to help you turn to Him in these moments of burning anger.
