Is fear a sin?

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Living on the East Coast is fun, but I’m filled with terror when hurricane season arrives, and I take every precaution there is. But some of my friends seem to laugh at a coming storm. Is fear a sin? – N.D.

A: Fear grips people’s hearts when danger lurks. People have faced ominous storms since the beginning of time. Many face them with defiance, refusing to pay attention to the warnings or prepare for …

PRAY OVER THIS

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

PONDER THIS

Guard your company. A companion of fools will be destroyed. Sometimes, the way to escape is the king’s highway, two legs, and a run. Pick them up and put them down. Just get out of there. When you deliberately place yourself into temptation, you have already sinned. God’s people should not play with sin: “Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned” (Proverbs 6:27)? The Bible says, “Flee sexual immorality” (1 Corinthians 6:18). You wouldn’t put garbage in your mouth, would you? Don’t put it in your mind either.

I used to have a motto on my desk when I was in college. It said this: “He who would not fall down ought not to walk in slippery places.” When you walk around in slippery places, you’re going to fall, and there’s going to be nothing to hold on to. Watch what you set before your eyes. Guard your company. A wise person displays discipline, but a companion of fools will be destroyed.

  • Where might you be in danger of playing with sin right now?
  • What would it look like for you to run? What do you need to do?

PRACTICE THIS

Take whatever action is needed to run and cut off any connection to sin that is lingering in your life today.
