Senator Craig Brandt Criticizes Tax Hike on New Mexico Businesses

SANTA FE – This week, the New Mexico business community rose up to protest a tax hike imposed upon them by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the Department of Workforce Solutions (DWS). According to recent media reports, approximately 7,000 business owners recently received notice that their unemployment insurance rates were increasing. The rates and premiums are calculated in part by employee turnover, but according to a recently enacted law, the quarterly tax rate was not to factor in employees lost due to the pandemic. Additional provisions were also enacted to keep rates steady and not place the increased unemployment burden on the backs of businesses already struggling to survive.

“This is nothing short of insult to injury,” said Senator Craig Brandt (District 40-Sandoval). “Our New Mexico business owners had the worst operating conditions in the nation imposed on them, and sadly, many did not make it. Now, the Governor’s administration is trying to shake down the small businesses left standing so they can fill the hole in their mismanaged unemployment insurance fund. This is particularly troubling given the fact that the Governor line-item vetoed our appropriation of millions of dollars to backfill the fund.”

In order to protect New Mexico businesses, Senator Brandt introduced a measure during the 2021 Regular Session that would have extended the use of the 2019 computed reserve factor and the omission of certain data from an employer’s calculated unemployment contribution tax rates. The bill was ignored by Democratic leadership and never received a committee hearing.

We have got to get back to work! The rate New Mexico is going we will never reopen! But the Governor got her ‘pot head’ bill passed and she is acting like that pot is her savior. Looking for money in all the wrong places. I have been feeling like a hostage in my own state! How about you? Do the people have any say anymore? How does New Mexico elect such ant-life people? Am I of the minority? We are against abortion and pot and this continued shut down that is making it hard for people to live life fully! I would like to know if I am of the minority in this state! There is not much good at all happening in New Mexico. The drought is not being talked about…..it is a looming disaster for the state. Murder is at a record pace in Albuquerque…..the list is to long…As Dr. Jim Denison said last week, “the church is losing its influence.”

But the Governor did legalize Pot! Governor Lujan Grisham said this on her victory for pot heads, “This is the kind of change I’m dreaming of when I talk about building a brighter future for New Mexico – a win-win that allows both individuals and communities to thrive. Together, we’ll keep fighting to make our bold agenda a reality. This session, we’ve proven that it’s possible.

Governor Doubles Down on Failed COVID Framework, Senator Cliff Pirtle Responds:

SANTA FE – Today, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the regression of 9 counties to the Yellow and Red COVID framework levels. Catron, Chaves, Eddy, Harding, Lincoln, Rio Arriba, Sierra, and Socorro all regressed to the Yellow Level, and Colfax moved to the Red Level. Senator Cliff Pirtle Responds:  “Unfortunately, the inevitable came to pass and New Mexico businesses are again facing more restrictions. We have been saying for months that the COVID framework was unsustainable. We knew that when COVID cases drastically declined, a percentage based model would make no sense, especially in rural counties. It is time for the Governor’s office to descend from their ivory tower of faulty statistics and delusion, and see the effects these policies have on regular New Mexicans. Because of her failure to remove or adapt the lockdown framework, business owners from some counties now have their livelihood in jeopardy because of less than a dozen cases in the entire county. More than half of our state’s citizens have had at least one vaccine and thousands more have recovered and are immune. There is no logical, scientific, moral, or ethical reason to keep our state closed down. It is time for a full reopening of our state.”
