Unreliable Emotions

by Joni Eareckson Tada

Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.

Psalm 105:5

Emotions are one of the most influential—and least reliable—forces we deal with in our lives. One day we’re hopeful; the next day we’re close to despair. Emotions are surging, restless tides that ebb and flow, drawing us up and then pushing us down. The psalms are gyroscopes for our emotions, keeping moving things level, like a ship held steady-on-course in turbulent seas. This is why the psalms often repeat the admonition to “remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.” The point? When dark and brooding emotions surge over you, threatening to drown you in doubt and fear, the only sure barrier against the flood is to remember what God has already undertaken and accomplished in your life. Remember the times you lived on His blessings, experienced His favor, and felt His everlasting arms underneath you. Those strong arms are still there!

Dear Lord, Light of the World, help me to remember Your great kindness and goodness to me when the horizon of my life begins to darken. Time after time, You have given me fresh strength in my weakness, brought loving friends to my side, and pushed aside the devil’s attacks. And what You have done before—I know You will do it again.
