Give Us A Sign

Humans always seem to be looking for a sign…some kind of confirmation that what we want to believe is really true. We all have looked for a sign at some time in our life, or have seen one. Like in our national anthem: The rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. The trees’ changing colors and lower temperatures are a sign of fall and the robin a sign of spring… just as breathing is a sign of life.
As children of God, we look for signs of His imminent return. Non-believers look for ways to prove He never will. This was true even while Jesus walked the earth as we read in Matthew 12: 38-40 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Several more times Jesus was asked to show a sign, but His answer was the same…no sign would be given except for the sign of Jonas. When his disciples asked Him about signs that would show the end days were here, Jesus took time to explain to them in Matthew 24: 3 and Luke 21:7 exactly what must take place before He returns.

As for those looking for proof that God does exist, look no further than what your eyes can see or your ears can hear. Watch the sunset or see it rise, feel the heat of the sun and the coldness of winter winds. Look at your loved ones and feel your heart swell with love. Seek wisdom, which is the beginning of understanding…but God’s wisdom, not man’s, is what we must look for. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 1: 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified…unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness.

For those seeking a sign, there have been many in recent years alone. A page from God’s Word was found after a fire that destroyed a forest in Tennessee, A church containing a wooden cross burned to the ground… and the cross was left standing. We hear stories everyday of how people survive horriffic traffic accidents, storms blow houses away and the people are left unharmed. How could these be anything but the acts of God…signs that He does exist and controls all situations?

He shows us signs constantly and assures us He is there always watching and always protecting those who have placed their trust in Him. They may not always appear as red glares and bombs bursting, but they are there for those of us seeking…signs that He is who He says He is… Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Lord…and come think of it, there was an earthquake the moment He gave up His life…for Us!
