What is the secret to helping our child get through life well?

Sep 5, 2019

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: My husband and I are preparing to have our first child. Suddenly I am afraid of the responsibility that faces us. What is the secret to having assurance that we will help our child get through life well? — P.T.

A: Parenting may be the hardest job you will ever undertake. Brace for difficulties and stay close to the Lord for wisdom.

One of the great goals as a parent is to prepare children for adulthood as they grow up. From learning to brush their teeth and tie their shoes to helping with homework and teaching them to make wise decisions themselves, the day will come when parents won’t be around to help children through life. Use life’s experiences to show them the pitfalls that come when bad decisions are made, and the joys when good decisions are carried out.

This applies also to spiritual foundations. We must teach our children what it means to walk with Christ every day, teach them to pray and to love the Bible and live by its truths. Encourage them to give their lives to Jesus Christ. We must not wait until they are grown to talk with them about the most important decision they will ever make — asking God to forgive their sin and having the hope of Heaven. Begin at birth to make Christ known. There is nothing that pleases Him more than to see people at any age receive Him as Savior, but what a blessing to those who find Him early in life.
