The Fragrance of Him

Hosea 14:6 His shoots will sprout, And His beauty will be like the olive tree, and His fragrance like the cedars of Lebanon.

2 Corinthians 2:14-15 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in His triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing…

When I think of the aroma of the Lord, I think of how it smells when the rain’s coming, or the smell of the earth after the rain. My husband thinks of the smell of our kids’ heads.

On time, Ron and I were talking about the Father and the things He was showing us when a beautiful aroma filled the room! It smelled like sweet spices.

What causes this aroma talked about in the above scriptures? I believe it is how we love and serve others.

Loving and serving others involves personal sacrifice. It takes our time, it takes a listening heart, and it takes travel sometimes. It requires putting others needs above ours. It may require turning the TV off. Uh oh! Or putting that book down, etc.

I remember a time many years ago that I heard that beautiful still, small voice say to me, “Your servanthood stinks.”

I can’t remember much about it, but that someone wanted me to do something and I said I was busy…had plans. Nothing important, just things I wanted to do.

The root of the stench is selfishness. How many of the perishing do you think we’ve chased off with our stench? I’ve learned a lot since then.

I’ve learned more about being Him and walking in the Spirit. He’s a great and kind teacher. He is ever patient. Loving and serving are expressions of Him.

Philippians 4:18 But I have received everything in full, and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, have received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God.

In loving and serving others we send a fragrant aroma to our Abba. That is an expression of His heart, and one of the ways we are Him to others.

Ephesians 5:1-2 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!

Encourage, help, listen, hug, smile, feed…love and serve. Amen and so be it.
