Titus 3:9-10 “ But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self condemned.” My thoughts…. Paul warned Titus, as he warned Timothy, not to get involved in foolish and unprofitable arguments. Paul is warning against Petty quarrels, not honest discussions that leads to wisdom. If foolish arguments develop it is best to turn the discussion back to a helpful direction or politely just excuse yourself.. we should avoid such discussions not even bothering to react to their pretentious positions.. overreaction sometimes gives more attention to their points of view instead of Gods.. bottom line.. a person must be warned when he or she is causing division that threatens the unity of the church. Sometimes these warnings seem heavy-handed however, it is needed sometimes to correct the individuals divisive nature and restore him or her to fellowship.. A person who refuses to be corrected should be put outside the fellowship. As Paul said that person is self condemned because he or she is sinning and they know it.. they promote trivial and divisive controversies instead of helping people come to Jesus. They aren’t concerned about personal evidence of God‘s presence in their lives, spending their time on meaningless talk …their motivation is to make a name for themselves.. I know this might sound harsh to many, but it is necessary sometimes.. Paul would not have written it if it was not so.. Paul told Titus to teach the scriptures, but he demanded that he lived the scriptures.. We also must live the scriptures.. We must also teach encourage and correct others when necessary. We can easily feel afraid when others are more influential in the community or wealthier… But like Titus.. we should not let ourselves be threatened when we are trying to minister to others or provide godly leadership in the church.. Boy did I need to hear this… Lord let it begin with me… that is all..
