John 14:1-4 – Consoler
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Our world is spinning out of control at a faster pace than ever thought possible by most. It’s enough to give a person a case of “heart-fear” that no remedy in the world can cure. But Jesus states, rather matter-of-factly, that we have the ability to decide if our hearts are troubled or not. But He doesn’t just tell us what not to do, but tells why and how – trust in God, trust in Him. The word trust is better translated believe, as in place one’s complete faith in. If and when we do that, our hearts will no longer be troubled, no matter the surrounding circumstances.
Jesus then gives us the follow up “therapy” – focusing on the future hope that is every believer’s possession. He assures us that this life and its troubles are not all there are for us. This therapy has six parts that we must incorporate into our daily life to keep away “heart-fear”.
One, His Father has more than enough room to house us throughout all eternity. Not one believer will be “left out in the cold”. Heaven will have exactly the room needed to take care of us. No matter the struggles in this life, your eternal life will be more than adequately supplied.
Two, if this were not the truth, Jesus would be sure to set the record straight. I’m amazed at how quick we are to believe an “expert’s” word but doubt the word of the very Son of God. We can rest in calm assurance that what God has declared is true and accurate – Jesus has said so, and He is the very logos, or living Word of God.
Three, Jesus is personally overseeing and preparing each dwelling place. No “tract housing” or cookie-cutter plans here. Jesus, who desires to be your personal Savior, is also planning a personal dwelling place that fits you perfectly.
Four, He not only is preparing that special place for you, but He will come again and take us back. He will not leave it to chance, letting us stumble and meander our way to Heaven, He’ll come and be our personal guide. We might know the path, but we do know the path builder – and He’ll make sure we don’t become lost along the way.
Five, when we arrive at our personal dwelling place in His Father’s house, He’ll remain there with us. He’ll not drop us off and then keep going to some “special” place where He dwells aloof from us. We’ll spend eternity in His neighborhood!
Six, although He says He’ll come back and get us, the way there is not a deep, dark secret. We know the way – it’s Him! That’s why He said in verse six of John 14, “I am the way…no one comes to the Father (and His house) except through me.”
So today, stop letting “heart-fear” trouble you – follow the prescription given here by the Great Physician and know that this shall all pass away and we’ll take our place in the Father’s house – for a peaceful eternity!
