God Can Handle Your Anger

God Can Handle Your Anger

by Joni Eareckson Tada

In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

Ephesians 4:26-27

It’s not uncommon for someone to feel angry at God. Many believers, however, are reluctant or afraid to bare such feelings, so they bottle them up. But that’s not what God wants. God can handle your questions, your disappointment, and your anger.

Today’s Scripture reads, “In your anger do not sin,” so we know that not all anger is wrong. The next part of the verse reads, “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” You can either move toward God with your heated questions or move away from Him. The thing you never want to do is to talk badly about Him, causing others to be angry or cynical. And you don’t want to nurse your anger, letting it turn into bitterness. No, rather take it all to the Lord. He is big enough to handle your anger, and gentle enough to comfort your heart.

Father, You have heard my angry prayers—prayers uttered through tears and clenched teeth. And You have never turned away from me. You really hear me when I pour out my heart to You. Thank You for Your patient love. Thank You for my High Priest, the Lord Jesus, who understands and sympathizes with every longing in my heart.
