Are There Dangers to Biblical Clarity?

Q: As a college professor I am constantly struggling with many subjects and ideologies that are taught in the classroom. When it comes to Biblical clarity on issues I stand strong, but on topics like “groupthink,” I am not sure it is an issue worth speaking against. Are there dangers in this area? — G.T.

A: The education system has certainly embraced “groupthink.” The allure of identity, security and acceptance drives us into patterns of thought, action and behavior. We tend to think, act and talk like those around us. And one of our most deep-seated fears is that we might be called an “outsider,” a concept that in recent years has been a topic in the news.

This fear has led us down the road to conformity and has imprinted our souls with man’s thoughts. It has robbed us of originality and individuality, invading not only our secular life but our religious life as well.

It is not easy to break away from “groupthink” that has permeated society. It is terrifying to note the way in which crowds can be swayed to believe almost anything, whether it be true or false.

With the breakdown of discipline in the home and with every source of amusement and instruction pouring poison into daily life, it is no wonder that the minds of people are ready to receive anything but the truth. But Jesus Christ calls us out from “the group” and says, “Follow Me.” He calls us to conformity according to His standard which brings peace to our hearts. Christ can fill the vacuum and He can restore personal identity and He will give us the ability to think as He thinks. “But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16).
