Rain May Suppress Wildfires in Eastern Arizona and Western New Mexico

Widespread rain may suppress Spring wildfire season for much of eastern Arizona and western New Mexico.
Albuquerque forecast

Humidity levels have already increased and there will be enough instability for a few thunderstorms in central New Mexico this afternoon. The southwesterly winds that are expected this afternoon don’t favor thunderstorms in Albuquerque. Hence only the slight chance for showers this afternoon.

Chances for showers will increase as the remnants of Hurricane Bud move into Arizona and New Mexico tonight. As of Friday morning, those remnants are moving north through Sonora and Chihuahua in response to a low pressure system west of Baja.

Widespread rain is expected across to develop across much of eastern Arizona and western New Mexico beginning tonight and lasting into Saturday. Here in Albuquerque, rain could start tonight, but the best chance will be Saturday morning. The most likely scenario appears to be several hours of steady rain across the Albuquerque metro area beginning about 7 or 8 AM. The widespread rain around the region may well mark the end of wildfire season for much of eastern Arizona and western New Mexico.

Additional showers are possible Saturday afternoon as the low pressure disturbance associated with the remnants of Bud moves over central New Mexico. As the disturbance passes, our chance for showers and thunderstorms will gradually decrease Saturday night. There may be a few showers over the mountains Sunday, but chances for additional rain in Albuquerque look minimal.
