Guidance System

I am not sure why, but I started reading about satellites this morning. It is amazing how they can stay up in space for years! How they are launched, how they are fueled, and the process of keeping them in the correct position to maintain orbit. When the satellites are no longer working correctly, they are either brought lower, where they begin their decent back to earth and are burned up in the atmosphere, or they are sent higher up, where they become “space junk!” Did you know that there is tons of stuff just floating around in space? It’s kind of like a space “garbage dump” of sorts…screws and bolts, old satellites, etc., just floating around up there. It’s crazy! The “space garbage” actually has to be tracked and monitored to keep the good space objects from crashing into it and potentially causing a major issue.

GPS or “Global Positioning System” is another amazing tool. I live by my GPS! I have no sense of direction. For those of you who share this “handicap,” you understand how frustrating it can be to get directions from someone who is telling you, “Go south on the highway and turn west on 5th street.” West? Is that the gas station or the Arby’s???? You also understand the potential fear that may be experienced when your GPS “pauses” at a critical part of your trip to try and relocate one of those working satellites!

Thankfully, God didn’t leave us on the earth without an awesome guidance system. He gave us an important tool in His Word, the Bible! God’s word helps keep us on the right track and assists us in avoiding “the space garbage.” It never has to pause to recalibrate or locate a working satellite. It is constant. His Word always points us back to Him.

However, it is so easy to get distracted by the things of life. We take our eyes off Jesus and let the garbage of this world rob us of our peace. Before we know it, we find ourselves wondering how we ended up in the town of Worry and Confusion…were we supposed to take that left turn at the corner of Distraction?

The Bible tells us that “God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).” It also says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” Essentially, His Word is our GPS!

Feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, confused, frustrated, angry, don’t know which way to turn? Go to the GPS of all GPS’s…God’s Word.

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that God’s Word is alive and active! “It is shaper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Heavenly Father, I ask today that you would speak to us through your living word, refuel those who are feeling discouraged or empty, and guide us through the “space garbage” that so often surrounds us. We thank you for providing us such an awesome tool that lights up our pathway and guides our footsteps. We love you Lord Jesus. Amen
