Is it possible to be perfect?

Apr 12, 2018

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Do you think it’s possible to be perfect if we just try hard enough? I’ve tried and tried to become a better person, and I know I’ve made some progress, but I get discouraged because I can’t seem to make it to a higher level. God must be very disappointed in me. Am I doing something wrong? — Mrs. N.S.

A: Although it may shock you, the one thing you are doing wrong is trying to be perfect! You are like an athlete trying to jump across the Grand Canyon; you may make it farther than most people, but you’ll still fall woefully short.

Why is this? The reason, the Bible says, is because something is wrong with us that makes it impossible for us to be perfect. That “something” is sin, which has corrupted our hearts and crippled our wills so much that no matter how hard we try, we’ll never be perfect. The Apostle Paul discovered this in his own life: “I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out” (Romans 7:18).

This is why we need Christ, for only He can take away our sin and our guilt, and replace them with His forgiveness and grace. He came to earth for one reason: to provide the way for us to become perfect in the eyes of God. He did this by taking upon Himself our sins and our judgment, and clothing us in His perfect righteousness.

Don’t let your pride, or anything else, keep you from giving your life to Jesus Christ. God loves you; He loves you so much that He wants you to be with Him forever. Don’t trust your own goodness, but confess your sins to Christ and open your heart and life to His transforming power.
