Jesus came into the world to make our lives better…

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Jesus came into the world to make our lives better — and He demonstrated it both by what He did and by what He said. Healing the sick, confronting evil, teaching us how to live — why would anyone be opposed to that? As the Bible says, “He went around doing good and healing all those who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him” (Acts 10:38).

And yet some still hated Him and sought His death. Shortly after His birth, King Herod tried to kill Him. When Jesus visited His hometown, they rejected what He said and attempted to throw Him off a nearby cliff. Some political and religious leaders began plotting His death after He exposed their hypocrisy. Pilate, the Roman governor, gave in to the pressure of the crowd and ordered His execution.

Why did they hate Him? Some opposed Him because they were afraid of losing their wealth or power if Jesus became popular. Others hated Him because He exposed their greed and pride and injustice, and they didn’t want to repent and change their ways. Still others turned against Him because He refused to meet their selfish demands. Eventually they succeeded in nailing Him to a cross.

What keeps you from surrendering your life to Jesus? Are you clinging to some sin you don’t want to give up (although you know it might destroy you)? Have you allowed bitterness or anger to grip your soul? Or are you determined to keep control of your life, instead of turning it over to God? Whatever your reasons, face them honestly — and then repent of them and commit your life to Christ. The Bible’s promise is true: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
