Why is There So Much Talk About Prayer?

Colossians 1:9-14 (NKJV): For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

You may have heard or may have asked, “Why do people talk so much about prayer?” You may have also heard people say, “I don’t pray anymore because my prayers have not been answered.” or “God doesn’t hear my prayers”. These are things we will have to take a look at another time of why this maybe true. However, we are encouraged to spend time in prayer.

If you take a look at what Paul is talking about here in this passage, we see that prayer will fill us with Knowledge and understanding from God. The greatest way to learn about His Knowledge and have understanding, is to pray scriptures. I have heard someone say not to pray Scriptures, however, it seems we are even encourages to do so.

1 John 5:14-17 (NKJV): Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. 16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

How will we know what His Will is without His Word? How will we know what sin is without His Word? Scripture is great to use in prayer. It helps us to hear from God and to understand where we need to change. If we pray Scripture, we may even find we will be able to memorize it so we can “bury it in our heart” (Psalm 119:11)

So what is so important about prayer? It has been said “Prayer doesn’t change God’s Mind, it changes our hearts.” ~R. C. Sproul

Luke 11:2-4 (NKJV): So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.”

Even here, where Jesus gave us the model prayer, He talks about turning our hearts to be more like what God would want from us. We give reverence to God. We seek our needs from Him. We seek His Will. We seek forgiveness and give forgiveness. We ask to not be given into anything that tempts us. We seek to not be given to the adversary.

The most important thing about Prayer is that we should seek to change with it. Are you praying often? If not, and you need help to be encouraged to do so, let me know. Prayer is a very important part of our lives.

Call out to Him and seek his Love and Forgiveness. It really is as hard or easy as you make it.

We should look to Him daily to seek a relationship with Him. I want to encourage you to seek Him today, if you haven’t already. If you need help, have questions or need direction in this regard, please, feel free to let me know.
