Nothing but the Blood

“Blood is thicker than water” is often reference to family being stronger than friendships, and allegiance to family must come first.   However, that is actually opposite to the origin.    The original intent was dealing with blood covenants of old.   The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb; which means we have actually got it backward — the “water of the womb,” or our family relationships, are not as strong as the “blood of the covenant.”

Believers enter into a blood covenant with Jesus Christ, His blood.   Therefore, the bond between a believer and his Christ must always be regarded as stronger than family.   This does not mean we are not to love and enjoy our family ties.   God ordained and blessed the family unit.   But, if the affairs of life necessitate a choice of loyalties, it must always tip toward our LORD.

Jesus said it like this;  “If any man come to Me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple”    (Luke 14:26).

This wording has often been vilified, but it is an idiom of preference.   We must prefer Him, Jesus, to all others if we find ourselves in a position where a choice is unavoidable.

Now, where am I going with all of these thoughts?   I’m glad you asked.   The blood of Jesus Christ runs though the total church of our LORD.   His blood sacrifice and covering makes each believer a member of God’s family.   God’s family is the only family unit that is eternal.   Many of your blood relatives have not yet been saved and adopted into the family of God.   Therefore, there will be a time when that earthly family blood tie is broken; there will be a separation for all time.   It is vitally important for each believer to step up his prayer and witness to lost family members while there is time.   Family blood is not strong enough to get them into heaven.  No one can inherit eternal life; they must enter a blood covenant with Christ Jesus.

Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There’s a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
