Has America Gone Too Far for Repentance?

A friend recently asked me this question.  Has America gone too far for repentance?  First of all, to suggest that goes against God’s nature in response to genuine repentance.    Secondly, the “Hope” I cling to rejects such an idea.  The Bible has many examples of God’s mercy given to the repentant, even when they have earned God’s judgment.   In addition, my life is an example of undeserved mercy.   Do I believe there is hope yet for America?   Yes, I believe that is true, as true as it was for me, and as true as it is seen in the Bible.   There is genuine hope. God is still willing to save people, a nation, including America, which turns to the LORD in repentance!

“At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.”    (Jeremiah 18:7-8)

An evil nation, having received God’s proclaimed judgment, will receive His mercy, after repentance, as is the example of Nineveh.      Nineveh repented and God changed His mind:       “And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said he would do unto them; and he did it not.” (Jonah 3:10) (See the little Book of Jonah)

Yes, though America may be under looming judgment of God, she may yet discover His grace and mercy!

It is in the nature of God to extend grace and mercy even to those who have earned His wrath, when they come unto Him in broken-hearted repentance.   He has given this hope as well:   “If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”            (II Chron. 7:14)

I believe “My people” to be an appropriate reference to His blood-bought Church today, the believers.  Is it too late for repentance in America?   Let God to respond to that, after we offer genuine repentance Church.   I have seen a few broken individuals in prayer before God, but I have yet to see a truly broken church.   Come On, Church.   Let’s get this right.   Pray On!
